Lection by Alexander Knysh on at the Department of Asian and African Studies of St. Petersburg State University

On December 20, the Head of the Laboratory Alxander Knysh gave a lecture and a seminar on the differences and similarities in approaches to the definition of the term “Islam” in various parts of the Muslim world. After a brief introduction describing the current state of intra-Islamic thought, he invited the participants to express their opinion on the proposed issues, covering various aspects of the topic. The presence of students with competence in various fields of humanitarian knowledge made the discussion lively and eventful. As a result, the participants came to the general conclusion: unity in diversity is one of the key features of Muslim thought and culture. The lecture was attended by more than 30 students and researchers from different departments of the University.

Two lectures by Efim Rezvan at the Faculty of Asian and African Studies of St. Petersburg State University

On December 13, Russian scholar of Arabic and Islamic Studies Efim Rezvan gave two lectures for students of the Department of African and Asian Studies.

The first lecture was devoted to Quranic ethnography, which studies the ethnographic realities of the Arabian society of the time of Muhammad. Efim Rezvan highlighted in detail the spectrum of sources on the early history of Islam and spoke about modern scientific approaches to the analysis of information about the sermon of Muhammad. He also emphasized the importance of studying the material culture and social structure of ancient Arabian society.

Lecture by Anna Matochkina “Retrospective development of graffiti in the Middle East: from rock inscriptions to Banksy”

On December 11 the Loft Project “Floors” hosted a lecture “Retrospective of the development of graffiti in the Middle East: from rock inscriptions to Banksy” by the laboratory member Anna Matochkina. The lection was organized by the society “Another East”.

During the lecture, students got acquainted with the centuries-old history of graffiti in the Middle East, learned about motivations of contemporary Arab artists to create graffiti The issue of the use of graffiti by Arab parties and political movements was also raised. In addition, the lecturer talked about the process of transforming public space through the placement of graffiti.

Andrey Panov`s lecture at the Department of Asian and African Studies of St. Petersburg State University

On November 20, Andrey Panov, the Deputy Director of the Department of the Middle East and African Countries of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, delivered lecture “Islamic extremism as an object of ideological manipulation on the example of the conflict in Syria.” During the lecture, Andrey Panov spoke about the course of the events of the Arab Spring, their background and the reconstruction of the cause-effect relationships of this phenomenon. The lecturer also covered in detail the activities of various global and regional actors in the Middle East and spoke about the dynamics of political changes in the situation in this region.

Congress of the Bicentennial of the Institute of Asian and African Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences

On October 29, a congress dedicated to the 200th anniversary of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) opened in Moscow. The Congress was opened by Vitaly Naumkin the Scientific Director of the Institute of Asian and African Studies of the RAS, and Dmitry Peskov, Deputy Head of the Presidential Administration, Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation. Several high-ranked Russian officials also took part in the ivent.

Mikhail Piotrovsky, the Director General of the State Hermitage Museum, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Dean of the Department of Asian and African Studies of St. Petersburg State University and Alexander Knysh, the head of the Scientific Laboratory for Analysis and Modeling of Social Processes of St. Petersburg State University participated in the congress as honored guests.

The start of the webinar course “Islam in Russia”

On Monday, September 10, a new webinar course was launched, in which students of Islamic studies programs at St. Petersburg State University. During the course, which will last the entire fall semester of 2018, they will participate in series of webinars devoted to various periods in the history of Islam and Islamic studies in Russia. The course is also open for the students of the University of Michigan and Kazan Federal University.

Webinars “Islamic Movements in Comparative Perspective”

From March 5 to May 2, 2018, the Faculty of Oriental Studies is hosting a series of webinars dedicated to the study of Islamic movements in a comparative perspective. The webinars are attended by students and postgraduates of St. Petersburg State University, incl. students of the programs for training specialists with in-depth study of Islam, and students of the University of Michigan, taking the course Islamic Movements in Comparative Perspective under the supervision of the head of the Scientific Laboratory for Analysis and Modeling of Social Processes A.D.
