“Islam and Islamic Themes in Society, Culture and Cyberspace”

On October 29–31, 2014 the Kazan Federal University hosted the Fourth Kazan International Academic Forum “Islam in the Multicultural World”. Every year the Forum has a different central theme. This year it explored the adaptation and integration of Muslim minority communities in various European countries. The Forum has already established itself as an important major academic venue for discussion of current issues in the field of Islamic studies and other academic disciplines devoted to the study of Muslim societies. Participants arrived in Kazan from different countries: Finland, the USA, Georgia, Ukraine, Belarus, Netherlands, Poland, Hungary, Sweden, Germany, Russia.

The first workshop of the Forum

On 5 November 2014 the first workshop of the Forum for took place. Anastasia Ulangina, a PhD student from the Department of Oriental studies talked about “Views of Islam in the Modern Saudi Novel”. Ulangina’s presentation resulted in a lively discussion of tensions between a quest for freedom of expression and Islamic norms and patriarchal constraints in the conservative societies of the Gulf. Conference of the Young Arabists

A conference of young Arabists held at the Institute of Oriental Manuscripts on September 25 was attended by students and graduates of SPSU and other educational institutions of St. Petersburg. It is interesting to note that the conference was conducted in Arabic. Laboratory staff Vladimir Rozov and Oleg Sokolov took part in the conference with the following presentations:

  • “The place of the Arabic language in the typological classification of languages​​” (Vladimir Rozov)
  • “The historical novel in the literature of Yemen” (Oleg Sokolov)

“Virtual Jihad in the XXI Century: the Caucasus Emirate”

September 25, 2014, the Head of the Laboratory, Alexander Knysh, held the seminar “Virtual Jihad in the XXI century: the Caucasus Emirate” at the European University. At the beginning of the seminar Professor A. Knysh gave a lecture on the stated topic followed by a lively discussion. In addition to the scientific community the seminar was attended by a large number of students and postgraduate students from various educational institutions of St. Petersburg.

“The Quran and Quran Studies Today”

On September 24, the Laboratory held an open lecture of Alexander Knysh “Quran and Quran studies today.” The lecture was delivered within the frame of the training course “Quran” for students of the 4th year of study on the profile of “Economics of the Middle East.” Among the audience there were students and postgraduate students of various areas of training, as well as teachers.

Laboratory Staff at International Conferences

A series of conferences with the participation of the members of the Laboratory of analysis and modeling of social processes took place in September this year.

Humanitarians participate in the Congress WORLDCOMP 2014: New Opportunities for Interdisciplinary Research

From 21 to 24 July Las Vegas (Nevada, USA) hosted another World Congress in Computer Science, Computer Engineering and Applied Computing WORLDCOMP 2014.

Our colleagues, Professor O. Redkin and O. Bernikova passed competitive selection and for the fourth time were invited to participate in the Conference on Artificial Intelligence (ICAI 2014), which is one of 22 conferences organized in the framework of the Congress.

Islam in Public Sphere

On Wednesday, June 25, the Laboratory organized another regular methodological workshop at the Faculty of Asian and African Studies. At the beginning of the workshop Alexander Knysh, head of the Laboratory made a presentation “Islam in Public Sphere: Manifestations and Contestations”. Senior teacher of the Department of the Philosophy and Culture of the Orient Anna Matochkina presented a report titled «Transformation of the Public Sphere in today’s Arab World». (more…)

«Islam and How to Approach It: A Profusion of Methodologies»

On Wednesday, June 11, Alexander Knysh, head of the Laboratory of Analysis and Modeling of Social Processes conducted a methodological workshop at the Faculty of Asian and African Studies. Entitled «Islam and How to Approach It: A Profusion of Methodologies», the  presentation and subsequent discussion were conducted  in English. The workshop was attended by teachers and students of the Faculty of Asian and African Studies, the Institute of Philosophy and the Faculty of International Relations. (more…)
